A digital solution for road barrier safety
MashBS is the new tool developed by Mashfrog to inspect, survey, and manage road barriers with speed, accuracy, and full regulatory compliance.

Mashfrog Group presents MashBS, the innovative digital solution designed to meet the needs of road safety barrier surveying and inspection in a concrete and advanced way. Developed by the Enterprise Digital Evolution Business Unit, MashBS sets a new standard in infrastructure management, aiming to simplify, automate, and enhance field control activities. Built on real-world experience, this solution is offered as a stand-alone platform, ready to serve the needs of both public and private road network operators. While fully integrable with SAP ERP, this integration is not required for the adoption or full functionality of the solution.
A strict and constantly evolving regulatory environment
The need for systematic monitoring of road barriers is more pressing than ever, given a complex and constantly evolving regulatory framework. Safety barriers, which are essential for mitigating the severity of accidents and containing vehicles in case of skidding, are governed by a set of technical regulations—from Ministerial Decree No. 223/1992 to the harmonized standard UNI EN 1317. These regulations define construction characteristics, testing criteria, and compliance requirements, including mandatory CE marking.
Further strengthening the regulatory framework are the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility (MIMS), which set specific deadlines for the completion of infrastructure surveys and risk assessments, extending these obligations to road barriers as well. Specifically, motorway concessionaires had until June 30, 2023, to comply with the regulations; ANAS until December 31, 2023; while Regions, Provinces, and Metropolitan Cities must comply by June 30, 2025. Municipalities with more than 15,000 inhabitants are required to comply by June 30, 2026, and those with fewer residents by December 31 of the same year.
In this regulatory landscape, where compliance is not only recommended but mandatory, advanced digital tools like MashBS are essential for ensuring traceability, control, and safety across infrastructure.
Two integrated tools for comprehensive and responsive management
MashBS is designed to cover the entire process of surveying and inspecting road barriers, in accordance with current guidelines and the EN 1317 standard. The solution not only enables the “virtual” classification of barriers based on containment level, presumed key characteristics, installation date, and relevant regulations, but also allows for the assessment of the preservation and functional condition of devices in operation across the network using a set of objective parameters — with the goal of identifying the most hazardous road segments.
MashBS is structured as an integrated platform consisting of two main components that work in synergy to ensure complete and continuous control over the entire life cycle of safety barriers.
The first module is a mobile app designed to support field operations. Using mobile devices compatible with iOS and Android systems, assigned technicians—either internal staff or external contractors—can inspect road barriers in real time, including guardrails and similar structures, and accurately record the condition of each element. The app enables a detailed analysis of barrier conditions and, thanks to a smart algorithm, processes the collected data to identify the need for maintenance, replacement, or simply to update the current status. This allows for an objective and timely assessment of the functional and structural conditions of the infrastructure.
The second tool is a web portal designed for Operations Management, aimed at facilitating centralized activity management. The portal allows for task assignment, real-time monitoring of field operations, and access to an up-to-date, detailed overview of the condition of surveyed barriers. This approach enables effective planning of maintenance or upgrade interventions, targeting only areas that truly require action, thereby reducing the risk in the event of vehicle run-off and optimizing resource use.
Upon request, the platform can be enhanced with georeferencing features, allowing survey data to be displayed on a map. This provides an even more immediate and strategic representation of infrastructure conditions.
A flexible and accessible solution for all road network operators
MashBS is aimed broadly at all entities involved in the management and maintenance of road networks—from large public bodies and concessionaires to local administrations and private operators. Unlike the solution developed specifically for ANAS, MashBS was conceived as an independent platform, also usable by organizations that do not use SAP as their ERP system. This makes it an extremely versatile and competitive offering, well-suited to a wide range of organizational and infrastructural contexts.
Through MashBS, Mashfrog strengthens its expertise in the field of Linear Asset Management by providing road operators with practical and scalable digital tools to enhance road safety, improve operational traceability, and support the adoption of maintenance best practices. In a landscape where operational efficiency and regulatory compliance are essential, MashBS delivers a structured, integrated, and immediately operational solution.
Tangible opportunities for safer and smarter management
Choosing MashBS means embracing an innovative vision of infrastructure management, where technology is not just operational support but a strategic lever. Road network operators who adopt this solution can rely on a flexible, accurate, and timely platform capable of providing an up-to-date picture of the state of barriers and supporting data-driven decisions regarding maintenance and safety. In an era where infrastructure must be resilient, safe, and sustainable, MashBS stands out as a key tool to meet today’s challenges and build a more reliable future.
